Now the new football season is under way we thought we would have a go at picking our fantasy football team, but instead replace the players with our favourite wines. We promise that none of our superstars will cost anywhere near what the real ones cost – imagine how many bottles of wine you could buy for the price of Neymar?!
So here we go, here is our pick for the start of the season:
Champagne Baron de Beaupre NV Brut – The best goalkeepers are steady and dependable with the power to surprise and stop you in your tracks. This guy does all those things and more, plus he’s been with us from the start.
Full Backs: Sileni Cellar Selection Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2014 – One of those bargains who turns out to be an absolute star, direct with plenty of character.
Eguren Ugarte Rioja Graciano 2014 – The kind of acquisition that adds a bit of spice to any occasion, bringing Spanish attitude and a point of difference.
Il Falchetto La Mora Monferrato Rosso DOC 2014 – Italy is famed for it’s fantastic defenders and this fella is Italian through and through. Classy with an occasional hint of flamboyance.
Penny’s Hill Cracking Black Shiraz 2014 – Our Captain, year on year he’s as solid as a rock. Big, bold and not afraid to get in your face.
Central Midfield: Château Lestrille 2010 – Adds a bit of age and experience to the team, still going strong and consistently delivering.
Casa Ferreirinha ‘Papa Figos’ Douro Tinto 2014 – In the team to add depth and quality with a wonderful ability to open up the opposition. Does have a darker side.
Wingers: Tinpot Hut Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016 – Zippy and sharp, this is one of the teams star players who always raises the excitement level.
Cantina Valle Isarco Aristos Kerner Alto Adige 2014 – The perfect winger, pacey and fresh with lots of tricks in the locker and the end product to match.
La Crema Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2014 – Steady and cool as you like, this chap always hits the spot, perfect to have up-front.
Berton Vineyards Berton Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 – The man of the moment and marquee signing, everyone is singing his name and he delivers with an excellent finish.
As you may have spotted we have no-one English in here, so it’s just like the Premier League. We’re just going to throw out the classic excuses – their too expensive, not enough investment at grassroots etc. and hope for the best. We hope you enjoy our winning team selection!
